It’s only Tuesday, but Labor Day is already on my mind. The weather feels a little different around here the last day or so. It’s not fall weather, exactly – the temperatures are still hot and we’re still jumping in the pool – but there’s a different feel to the air, if you know what I mean. There’s that fall-like feeling, even though it’s still August, and it’s kind of weird. Then, my favorite local radio DJ made mention that the Farmer’s Almanac is predicting a very cold winter this year. Maybe that’s what it is. Maybe I’m just sensing that it might be really cold here in a few months and I’m trying to prepare myself.
Even if we don’t suddenly start having cold nights after Labor day, it does somewhat officially mark the end of our summer. We’ll be starting school back up on Tuesday. Once we do that, my life gets pretty intensely focused: school and writing take up the good majority of my time. I do enjoy it. Having these two big priorities that take up a lot of my time makes it easy for me to avoid the time sucker activities that I sometimes resort to during the summer, like visiting totally useless websites or watching thoroughly idiotic TV shows (I hate to confess this, but I actually got sucked into that Marriage Boot Camp show on WE for a couple of weeks.)
So I’m looking forward to this weekend as one last summer hurrah. We’ll spend as much time as possible in the pool (hopefully the rain will hold off so that we can), grill out, and enjoy the last long weekend of the season, before we settle back into a slightly more rigorous schedule.
Though I love the laziness of summer – the ability to write whenever, rather than working it in around homeschooling, the more relaxed atmosphere – I do find myself looking forward to fall a bit. Eventually, it will mean cooler temperatures, which is always a welcome relief after the intense heat of summer. Then we have all kinds of holidays, family birthdays and anniversaries to look forward to, and fun activities with friends and family like pumpkin carving, trick-or-treating, and Christmas shopping.
Speaking of shopping…since this is the last long weekend of summer, I know some of you will be heading to the beach, or may unfortunately be cooped up thanks to rain, and might want a good book to read. So, I thought I’d be nice and help you out: Tomorrow, August 28th and Thursday, August 29th, Tangled Deceit will be free on Amazon. It’s a great read for the weekend, and if you haven’t read it yet, you should definitely think about picking up your free copy. And I’d love to hear what you think when you finish it!
And now it’s time to head out into the heat, and whack the mosquitoes away until I get annoyed enough to get into the pool, where they’re only slightly less annoying. Enjoy your afternoon!
