It never ends

Since the release of Tangled Deceit, things have not slowed down. It’s summer, so we’re not homeschooling at the moment, but that doesn’t mean much.

Since my last post, I’ve been hard at work on my second book. I’ve completed my first draft, and now it’s set aside. In about a month, I will return to it and begin the editing process. In the meantime, I will begin working on the first draft of the next book. I’ve begun the research process for that one.

I got to interview a local radio personality today. In the third book, one of my characters is going to be a radio DJ. Charlie McGraw is a DJ at our local classic rock station, and he was kind enough to answer my many questions about the career. By learning more about it, from someone who actually does it, it becomes much easier to immerse myself in the story and imagine what my character would do at various points.

Now that that interview is over, however, I’m taking a few days to relax before I move on with the research and/or writing process on the next book. Many people think that writing is tons of fun and easy to do. I will admit, it is tons of fun, and for me, is relatively easy because I am very creative. But it does have it’s difficulties. One of which being the need to “be” a different person. I don’t want all of my characters in all of my books to be cookie cutters of each other. This means I need to take a short break between writing one and writing another, so that I can get the characters from the previous book out of my head. Then I can explore the new book’s characters and give them their own personalities.

I’ve been enjoying time with my kids as well. We go to $1 movies at a local theater twice a week. They’re older movies, but often we haven’t seen them. And even when we have, it’s still a pleasant interlude for us. It gets us out of the house, gives us something to do together, and it’s about the only way we can afford a visit to the theater these days. It’s ridiculous how expensive it’s gotten!

We’ve been spending a lot of time in the pool as well. It’s just too hot to do much else. If it’s not ridiculously hot, it’s raining.

Next week, I’ll be getting busy with planning for the start of our homeschool year. It’s still several weeks away, but I’d like to plan some in advance so that things will be less stressful. Starting mid-year last year made things a bit difficult and more than a little “by the seat of our pants.” I’d like to be more organized and have a sort of road map of where we’re starting, where we’ll end up, and all the points in between.

For now, I’m going to enjoy a few chapters of a good book, cool off in the pool, and relax. If you come back later, I’ll be posting reviews of a couple of recent books I read.

Enjoy your summer!
